Hello, I'm
Shelah A Johnson
Welcome to my website! If you like flawed women and men a little sloppy, you’ll love this saga’s cinematic details and unapologetic true-life characters, voices that deserve to have a lasting place in the human lexicon.
About Me
I’ve come to believe that our parents’ dysfunction is one of our greatest inheritances. This belief is deeply intertwined with my journey as a writer.
I began writing The Boloney Trail while in college, encouraged by my English professor to pursue it full-time. Instead, I took a different path. After college, I became an ad copywriter for national agencies, working with Blue-chip tech companies. It was rewarding—I won nine awards from the Society of Technical Communication and led a national committee on translation standards in D.C. But during a meeting, I realized I had taken a wrong turn.
A global layoff gave me the push to change course. I downsized my life, moved into a mid-century Airstream on a Northwest island, and started a small production company. I produced over forty short segments on small-space living and a ten-episode documentary Where Small Business Grows, now on Amazon. My first two books in The Boloney Trail Trilogy were selected for Cambridge University’s Alumni Reading Challenges list – I’m working on the third now.
Accepting inherent flaws as part of our inheritance, sometimes our only inheritance, allowed me to see the beauty in imperfection. It freed me from the need to polish the voices of my true-life characters, and instead, I learned to revel in their raw beauty. I hope you will too, as you journey along The Boloney Trail.
The Boloney Trail
LITERARY FICTION | CRIME | ADVENTURE | HISTORICAL
Based on actual events, The Boloney Trail Trilogy chronicles three generations of the Hornbeck family, capturing their tumultuous journey from the trials of the Great Depression to their pivotal involvement in the genesis of the feared Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel in the early 1960s. In this sweeping saga, a formidable cast of characters relentlessly pursue the middle-class dream with an obsessive burning desire to find a gateway into financial stability. However, their aspirations are met with harsh realities as the promise of the middle class slowly disintegrates before their eyes. The trilogy delves deep into the complexities of socio-economic challenges, moral dilemmas, and the profound impact of historical events on individual lives, painting a vivid picture of resilience, ambition, and the dark underbelly of societal change that is now more relatable than ever.
Why This Story Matters
Not since the Great Depression has the middle class faced such a profound loss of faith in the American Dream. While the names and faces have changed, the core challenges remain: social and economic inequality, racial bias, religious extremism, and climate-related disasters. These issues, fueled by uncertainty, exacerbate homelessness and a burgeoning mental health crisis.
History shows that desperation drives people apart, widening the gap for the economic elite to seize power. The middle class, once the backbone of society, is now teetering on the brink of extinction. To restore it, we must unite inclusively and fight to reclaim it for everyone. It’s all or nothing.
The true events chronicled in The Boloney Trail trilogy serve as a stark reminder of what is at stake. This saga, spanning generations, captures the relentless pursuit of financial stability amidst socio-economic challenges and moral dilemmas. As the middle-class dream disintegrates, the resilience and ambition of the characters mirror our own struggles today.
To prevent history from repeating itself, we must draw lessons from the past and take collective action. The fight to reclaim the middle class is not just for economic stability, but for the very soul of our society.
